Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
Taa marbuta (ة) marks most feminine nouns. Rule: adjectives agree with the noun they describe in gender. Position of adjectives: AFTER the noun in Arabic (noun + adjective). Exceptions to ة rule: some nouns are feminine without ة (e.g. أم، بنت، أرض). Introduction to non-verbal sentences with adjectives: هذا طالب جديد / هذه طالبة جديدة.
Notice the pattern
- طالِب
- طالِبة
- مُعَلِّم
- مُعَلِّمة
Accuracy checklist
- Check the subject and verb or noun/adjective agreement.

Now correct one of your own sentences if needed.
Skills Practice
Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing with the same lesson language.
Listening
Listen for intention. Listen twice: first for the overall meaning, then for evidence.
🎧 Recorded audio coming soon — use the device voice for listening practice now. Keep the transcript hidden for your first two listens.
- What is the main topic or situation?
- Is the purpose to describe, explain, advise, invite, complain or persuade?
- What clue helped you identify the purpose?
Check your listening
A successful answer identifies the main topic, at least three accurate words and one relevant detail. Replay once, then reveal the transcript only if you still need support.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main idea or situation?
- Choose one phrase and explain what it means in this context.
- Find one example that shows the lesson language or grammar in use.
- What extra detail could you add to make the text more complete?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Describe two people or things using the target agreement accurately. Give at least three complete examples.
- Use at least three useful items from this lesson and one complete sentence with the target grammar.
- Add one reason, detail or example instead of giving only a short answer.
Working alone? Record yourself for 30–60 seconds, listen back once, and improve one pronunciation, grammar or fluency point.
Writing
Plan, write, check and improve.
Task: Write a short personal message or profile using the lesson focus and vocabulary. Target: 40–60 words.
Need help? Build your answer in small steps
- Opening: one clear sentence that answers the task.
- Detail: add two relevant pieces of information.
- Extend: add a reason, opinion, time phrase or example.
- Check: compare agreement, spelling and tense with the lesson rule.
Patterns from this lesson you can adapt:
- طالب جديد
- طالبة جديدة
Try first without opening this support. Adapt the patterns; do not copy them as a complete answer.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
Spot the ة
Write 10 words on paper (mix of masculine and feminine). Write M or F on their paper or a notes app. Check: discuss any tricky ones (e.g. أستاذ m. vs أستاذة f.). Ask: "What pattern do you notice for feminine?" Establish the ة rule. Then ask: "Can you think of any exceptions?" you may suggest بنت, أم — excellent if you do. This activates prior knowledge and sets up the lesson.
Taa marbuta and adjective agreement
Explain the rule systematically: 1) Identify the noun's gender. 2) Choose the matching adjective form. Model: طالب جديد (m.) vs طالبة جديدة (f.). Write 6 noun+adjective pairs on paper with blanks. Complete: "مُعَلِّم ___ (كبير)" → مُعَلِّم كبير. "صَديقة ___ (ذكي)" → صَديقة ذكيَّة. Drill orally — your partner says noun+adjective in English, you say in Arabic with correct agreement. Work through 8 pairs.
Classroom picture description
Study a picture of a busy classroom scene with multiple people. You describe what you see using هذا/هذه + noun + adjective. "هذا مُعَلِّم كبير. هذه طالبة جديدة. هذا وَلَد ذكي." Read the three model sentences, then produce five more of your own. Say your answer aloud or compare it with a partner — Check gender agreement against the lesson rule and correct any errors. This directly mirrors the type of descriptive language needed for Paper 3 topic conversations.
Sorting card activity
Make or use a set of noun cards and adjective cards (10 nouns, 10 adjectives). You match and create correct noun+adjective phrases, writing each on your paper or a notes app. Challenge: can they use the phrase in a full sentence? "أنا طالب جديد في هذه المدرسة." Heritage extension: write 5 sentences about people in their family using correct gender agreement.
Describe yourself and a another person
Write 3 sentences describing themselves using adjectives: "أنا طالب/طالبة [adjective]. أنا [adjective]." Then write 1 sentence about a another person (kind, not mean). Read one or two aloud, then self-check. Use the lesson rule to correct any agreement errors. You add today's adjective list to vocabulary books with gender forms clearly marked.
