Grammar

Masculine/feminine for food nouns — most are masculine; exceptions: قهوة، فراولة، بطاطس. Definite article with food: الخبز (the bread) vs خبز (bread — indefinite). يأكل/يشرب as third person singular present: هو يأكل، هي تشرب. Plural of food: some are broken plurals already given in their plural form (طماطم، بطاطس، فراولة). Numbers with food: كِيلو من البطاطس (a kilo of potatoes) — من + definite noun for partitive.
Notice the pattern
- آكُل الخُبز كلَّ يوم.
- أُحِبُّ الأُرز مع الدَّجاج.

Activities

Food words you already know
Ask You: "What Arabic food words do you already know?" You call out — teacher or partner writes on board. Many will know words from home or restaurants (hummus, falafel, shawarma, kebab). Validate: these ARE Arabic words used globally. Connect: Arabic food culture is part of world cuisine. Today we build a comprehensive food vocabulary. Study a vibrant image of an Arabic market (سوق) full of food — Identify what they recognise.
25 food items — categories and gender
Present food in 5 categories using flashcards: Grains/staples (خبز، أرز). Proteins (لحم، دجاج، سمك، بيض، جبن). Fruit (تفاح، موز، برتقال، عنب، فراولة). Vegetables (طماطم، خس، جزر، بصل، بطاطس). Drinks (ماء، عصير، حليب، شاي، قهوة). For each category: choral drill, write in books with gender marker (m./f.). Special attention to feminine exceptions. You then close books and write as many words as they can remember from each category — memory test. Check and add missed words.
يأكل and يشرب — habits and preferences
Model sentences: "أنا آكُل الخبز كل يوم. أنا لا أشرب القهوة. أخي يأكل كثيراً من اللحم. أختي تشرب الحليب كل صباح." Note: آكُل (I eat — hollow verb, أنا form). Write 6 sentences about their own eating habits using يأكل/تأكل/يشرب/تشرب for family members. Must include: at least 3 different foods, one positive and one negative (لا يأكل), one time expression (كل يوم/في الصباح/أحياناً).
Supermarket receipt reading task
Give You a simple Arabic supermarket receipt (teacher or partner-created) with 8 food items listed with quantities and prices in Arabic-Indic numerals. You answer: What did this person buy? How much did each item cost? What is the total? This reading task integrates food vocabulary with numbers and Arabic-Indic numerals from F1 — deliberate cross-unit retrieval. Write 3 sentences about the receipt: "اشترت هذه العائلة..." — noting that اشترت (she bought) is a past tense set phrase introduced contextually.
Food bingo
You draw a 3×3 bingo grid and fill with 9 food items from today's vocabulary (their choice). teacher or partner describes each food in Arabic (one sentence describing it — You must identify and mark it): "هذا فاكهة صفراء طويلة. نقشِّره قبل الأكل." (banana). First to complete a line wins. Play 3 rounds. This receptive comprehension game reviews vocabulary through description — exactly the skill needed for Paper 1 listening.
