Model analysis — food and health writing
Study teacher or partner-written model (90 words): Paragraph 1 — description of a favourite Arabic dish (يتكوَّن من، يُقَدَّم مع، taste adjectives). Paragraph 2 — health perspective (health benefits of ingredients, advice for eating well). Annotate: blue = يتكوَّن من/يُقَدَّم مع (composition structures). Red = modal advice structure. Green = taste adjective. Orange = cultural reference. Count each. "This 90-word text has 2 composition structures, 2 modal structures, 3 taste adjectives. For Range 5/5, aim for at least one of each of the 5 criteria."
Planning — 2 paragraphs
Task: Article or email (80–100 words) on food and health. Choose: (A) "طَعامي المُفَضَّل وقيمتُه الصِّحِّيَّة" (My favourite food and its health value). (B) "النِّظام الغِذائي الصِّحِّي في نَظَري" (A healthy diet in my view). (C) "المَطبَخ العَرَبي — طَعيم وصِحِّي" (Arabic cuisine — delicious and healthy). You plan: P1 topic sentence + 3 detail points. P2 topic sentence + opinion/advice. 3 minutes. teacher or partner checks 5 plans — any without a composition structure? Flag before writing.
Extended writing — 80–100 words
Write their chosen topic. This is F5 — target is 80–100 words (appropriate for the Foundation year). Level 1: writing frame + vocabulary card. Level 2: planning grid only. Level 3 (heritage): 100+ words, no support, aim for Paper 4 Q3 quality. teacher or partner circulates: give live feedback on P1 (food description — composition structure accuracy). P2 focus: are modal advice structures varied (not just يجب أن repeated)? Focus feedback on 3 things: (1) يتكوَّن من/يُقَدَّم مع used? (2) Taste adjectives present? (3) Opinion given?
Peer marking — 3 criteria
Exchange books. Partner marks using the simplified mark scheme: Task Completion — food described (✓), health advice present (✓), opinion given (✓). Range — composition structure (✓/✗), modal structure (✓/✗), taste adjective (✓/✗), cultural reference (✓/✗). Accuracy — food noun gender errors circled, passive structure errors underlined. Partners write a score /15 and one specific improvement. This mark scheme literacy is being built progressively since F4 — by P1–P6 You will apply it independently and fluently.
Best composition sentence
teacher or partner quickly scans 5 books and reads out the best يتكوَّن من or يُقَدَّم مع sentence from each. After each: "What makes this sentence work? Is the passive form correct? Is the vocabulary specific?" You note the best sentences as models. Then: "Next lesson we listen — make sure you know your food and health vocabulary by ear as well as in writing."
