Past perfect (KEY NEW GRAMMAR): كان قد + past tense verb. Form: كان (past of to be — m. sing.) + قد (perfective particle) + past tense verb: كان قد أنهى دراسته قبل أَن يبدأ العمل (he had finished his studies before starting work). كانت قد (f. sing.): كانت قد تخصَّصت في الطب قبل أَن تغيِّر مسارها. Usage: describes an action completed BEFORE another past action — the most common use in education narratives ("by the time she graduated, she had already published two papers"). This is the temporal depth marker that separates good from excellent narrative writing.

Timeline of past events — setting up past perfect
Draw a timeline on paper: two past events — one clearly before the other. "Ahmed graduated in 2022. He HAD studied in Cairo for 4 years BEFORE he graduated." Ask yourself: "How do you express the earlier of two past actions?" Most will write simply قد درَس. "Arabic has a specific structure for this — called the past perfect — كان قد درَس. Today we learn it, because it is essential for writing about educational journeys: by the time she took the exam, she had already revised for three weeks; by the time he was accepted, he had applied to five universities."

Systematic teaching: كان قد + past verb = had done. For all persons: كنتُ قد (I had), كنتَ قد (you m. had), كانت قد (she had), كنَّا قد (we had), كانوا قد (they had). Apply to university scenarios: "كان قد درَس في القاهرة قبل أَن يلتحق بجامعة لندن. كانت قد حصَلت على منحة دراسية قبل أَن تُسافِر. كنتُ قد أنهيتُ بحثي قبل الاجتماع." Write 6 past perfect sentences about educational experiences. Check: is كان/كانت agreeing with the subject? Is the verb after قد in the past tense?

Write a university personal statement (خطاب التقدُّم): P1 (background — past perfect): "كنتُ قد قرَّرت دراسة الطب منذ كنتُ في المرحلة الإعدادية. بحلول نهاية المرحلة الثانوية، كنتُ قد أنجزتُ مشروع بحثي في علم الأحياء." P2 (current situation — present): "أدرُس الآن في السنة الأخيرة من المرحلة الثانوية وأتفوَّق في العلوم والرياضيات." P3 (future plans + conditional): "أطمح إلى الالتحاق بكلية الطب في جامعتكم. إذا قُبِلتُ، سأُكرِّس جهودي للبحث العلمي." You draw a personal educational timeline with 4 events and write past perfect sentences linking them: "بحلول سنّ الثانية عشرة، كنتُ قد [event]. بعد أَن [later event], كنتُ قد [earlier event]." Read your four examples aloud or compare them with a partner. "كان قد is what separates good storytelling from great storytelling in Arabic.
