Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
155-word model — two conditionals visible?
Study teacher or partner-written model (155 words, travel article). Annotate with the P3 Range checklist. Special focus: "Find the Type 1 conditional. Now find the Type 2 conditional. How are they different in this text? What argument does each one make?" Type 1 in the model: a real future recommendation for readers. Type 2 in the model: a counterfactual reflection on what should have been done differently. "Having both conditional types in Paper 4 writing earns two separate Range marks. A text with only Type 1 cannot get full Range. A text with only Type 2 sounds too negative. The balance of both is what skilled writing looks like."
Planning — both conditionals must be planned explicitly
Task: Article or email (145–160 words) on travel or tourism. Topics: (A) "رِحلة لا تُنسى — كَيف غيَّرَت نَظرَتي إلى العالَم." (B) "السِّياحة المُستَدامة في العالَم العَرَبي — تَحَدِّيات وحُلول." (C) "وِجهَتي المُفَضَّلة — دَليل شَخصي لِزِيارَتِها." You plan: specifically label where each conditional will appear — P2 (Type 1 conditional recommendation) and P3 (Type 2 conditional reflection). If the plan does not Look at both types with clear purpose, teacher or partner intervenes before writing begins. 4 minutes.
Extended writing — 145–160 words
Write. This is the longest piece in the programme — 145–160 words consistently above IGCSE minimum. Level 1: Range checklist + paragraph starters with conditional frames: "P2 conditional Type 1 frame: إذا [present tense action], [future tense result]. P3 conditional Type 2 frame: لَو [past tense], لَ[past conditional result]." Level 2: Range checklist only. Level 3 (heritage): full IGCSE conditions. teacher or partner circulates: give live feedback on P2 (Type 1 conditional tense accuracy) and P3 (Type 2 لـَ prefix — the most commonly forgotten element). Do NOT interrupt P1 (narrative) or P4 (conclusion). Target: 145 words minimum. Every student should complete all four paragraphs.
Both conditionals — self and peer verification
You highlight their Type 1 conditional in yellow and Type 2 conditional in green. Look at the highlighted version to partner. Partner verifies: (1) Yellow — is it إذا + present → future? (2) Green — is it لَو + past → لـَ + past conditional? If either is not correctly formed, partner writes the correct version above it. You implement corrections. Then count total Range markers: aim for 8+ of the 9 criteria.
The two conditionals working together
Listen as the text is read 3 student texts and asks: "In this text, what work does the Type 1 conditional do? What work does the Type 2 conditional do? Could you swap them without changing the meaning?" Usually: Type 1 looks forward (recommendation/plan), Type 2 looks back (regret/analysis). Swapping would change meaning fundamentally — and that distinction is exactly why both types exist and why Paper 4 examiners reward You who use both correctly.
