Quiz 1 — Meaning check
0 / 61. What does غابة مَعتَدِلة mean?
2. What does مَناخ مَحِيطي mean?
3. What does سِلسِلة غِذائِيَّة mean?
4. What does يُشكِّل mean?
5. What does نِظام بِيئي mean?
6. What does يُهَدِّد mean?
Quiz 2 — Match Arabic and English
العربية
English
Matched: 0 / 6
Stretch challenge
Choose three matched items and combine them into one accurate sentence or short exchange.
Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
يَضُمّ (Form I: encompasses — root ض-م-م, doubled): الغابة الاستوائية تَضُمّ آلاف الأنواع النباتية والحيوانية. يُشَكِّل (Form II: forms — root ش-ك-ل): يُشَكِّل المرجان بيئةً حيوية لآلاف الأسماك. يَتَفاعَل مَع (Form VI: interacts — root ف-ع-ل): كلُّ عنصر في النظام البيئي يتفاعَل مع العناصر الأخرى. Subjunctive in purpose clauses (NEW P4 grammar): لِكَي + subjunctive (retrieved from D4 D1–D6) now used with explicit subjunctive awareness: لِكَي تُحافِظَ الحكومات على التنوع الحيوي (so that governments protect biodiversity — يُحافِظَ is subjunctive form). You first encountered لِكَي in D4 D1–D6 — now it is formally identified as requiring subjunctive.
Notice the pattern
- يَضُمّ النِّظام البِيئي أَنواعاً مُتَعَدِّدة.
- حِمايَة التَّنَوُّع الحَيَوي ضَرورِيَّة.
- تَنهارُ السِّلسِلة الغِذائِيَّة إِذا اِنقَرَضَت أَنواعٌ رَئيسِيَّة.
- الشِّعاب المَرجانِيَّة مَوطِن طَبيعي لِلأَسماك.
Accuracy checklist
- Check the subject and verb or noun/adjective agreement.
- Check gender, number and tense or time frame.
- Use the lesson structure in a complete, meaningful sentence.
- Read the sentence aloud and correct anything that sounds incomplete.

Skills Practice
Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing with the same lesson language.
Listening
Listen for key details. Listen twice: first for the overall meaning, then for evidence.
🎧 Recorded audio coming soon — use the device voice for listening practice now. Keep the transcript hidden for your first two listens.
- What is the main topic or situation?
- Write two key details you hear.
- Which word or phrase helped you decide?
Check your listening
A successful answer identifies the main topic, at least three accurate words and one relevant detail. Replay once, then reveal the transcript only if you still need support.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main idea or situation?
- Choose one phrase and explain what it means in this context.
- Find one example that shows the lesson language or grammar in use.
- What extra detail could you add to make the text more complete?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Describe a place or environmental issue using the lesson focus. Give one cause, effect or possible solution.
- Use at least three useful items from this lesson and one complete sentence with the target grammar.
- Add one reason, detail or example instead of giving only a short answer.
Working alone? Record yourself for 30–60 seconds, listen back once, and improve one pronunciation, grammar or fluency point.
Writing
Plan, write, check and improve.
Task: Write a focused response about the built or natural world using the lesson focus and supporting detail. Target: 80–100 words, extending to 130–140 words for an extended exam-style task.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
The Arab world's natural landscapes
Study 4 images: the coral reefs of the Red Sea (one of the world's most biodiverse), the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter — world's largest continuous sand desert), the cedar forests of Lebanon (شجرة الأرز — national symbol), and the mangroves of the UAE (one of the world's most successful mangrove restoration programmes). Write one Arabic sentence about each image using يَضُمّ or يُشَكِّل. "The Arab world contains some of the planet's most extraordinary natural environments — and they are under threat. Today we learn to describe and discuss them in formal Arabic."
Ecosystem vocabulary and composition verbs
Present ecosystem vocabulary. Key new verbs: يَضُمّ (encompasses — doubled root, present: يضُمّ, imperative: ضُمَّ), يُشَكِّل (forms/constitutes), يَتَفاعَل مع (interacts with), يَعتَمِد على (depends on — Form VIII). Note the final ـَ vowel on the subjunctive verb.
Natural world description (100–110 words)
Write a description of a natural ecosystem found in the Arab world or globally: P1 (location + يضُمّ/يُشَكِّل): "يقع البحر الأحمر بين شبه الجزيرة العربية وشمال أفريقيا. Must include: يضُمّ/يُشَكِّل, both conditional types, لِكَي + subjunctive.
Subjunctive after لِكَي — systematic check
Write 5 sentences with لِكَي on paper — Identify whether the following verb is in the indicative (wrong) or subjunctive (correct, with final short vowel). Example: "نحتاج إلى قوانين صارمة لِكَي نَحمي (correct — subjunctive ـَ marker) الغابات / لِكَي نَحمِيُ (wrong — indicative marker ـُ)." This explicit subjunctive check is the grammatical precision work that P4 requires — You are now at the level where fine distinctions in mood matter for Accuracy marks.
The most endangered Arab world ecosystem
Write 2 sentences: one Type 1 conditional (current risk) and one Type 2 conditional (what should have been done) about the most threatened ecosystem in the Arab world. Read one or two aloud, or compare them with a partner. Class discusses: which ecosystem is most at risk? Which conditional type is harder to form? "The Type 2 conditional about environmental damage has a specific force — it says: the damage could have been prevented. That is both a historical critique and a moral argument. Arabic gives you this with لَو."
Useful to have
Things you can make or find to help you revise this lesson:
- Arab world ecosystem map
- Ecosystem description writing frame
- Biodiversity and conditional sentences activity
Stretch challenge
If you already speak some Arabic at home: write an environmental science report (110+ words) on a specific endangered ecosystem in an Arab country — covering: ecosystem composition (يضُمّ/يُشَكِّل), current threats (passive + cause-effect retrieval from D4), conservation measures (لِكَي + subjunctive), and conditional analysis of both types. Formal academic Arabic throughout.
Plenary
Finish with a quick check and one clear next step.
