Stretch challenge
Choose three matched items and combine them into one accurate sentence or short exchange.
Grammar
Read the rule, notice the pattern and then produce your own examples.
يَتَكَوَّن مِن (Form V: consists of — root ك-و-ن): الحمص يتكوَّن من الحِمَّص والطحينة. يُقَدَّم مَع (passive present: is served with — root ق-د-م, Form II passive): المنسف يُقَدَّم مع الأرز واللحم. مصنوع من (passive participle: made from — root ص-ن-ع). These three structures are valuable for food writing and appear in authentic Arabic food texts — you encounter them receptively in reading and use them productively in writing.
Notice the pattern
- آكُل الخُبز كلَّ يوم.
- أُحِبُّ الأُرز مع الدَّجاج.
- أخي يَأكُلُ اللَّحم.
- تَأكُلُ أُختي الدَّجاج.

Skills Practice
Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing with the same lesson language.
Listening
Listen for key details. Listen twice: first for the overall meaning, then for evidence.
🎧 Recorded audio coming soon — use the device voice for listening practice now. Keep the transcript hidden for your first two listens.
- What is the main topic or situation?
- Write two key details you hear.
- Which word or phrase helped you decide?
Check your listening
A successful answer identifies the main topic, at least three accurate words and one relevant detail. Replay once, then reveal the transcript only if you still need support.
Reading
Underline known words before answering.
- What is the main idea or situation?
- Choose one phrase and explain what it means in this context.
- Find one example that shows the lesson language or grammar in use.
- What extra detail could you add to make the text more complete?
Reading support
Start with names, numbers, repeated words, connectors and familiar verb patterns. You do not need to translate every word.
Speaking
Build your answer, then ask a follow-up question.
- Talk about food, health or the body using the lesson focus. Give one personal detail or piece of advice.
- Use at least three useful items from this lesson and one complete sentence with the target grammar.
- Add one reason, detail or example instead of giving only a short answer.
Working alone? Record yourself for 30–60 seconds, listen back once, and improve one pronunciation, grammar or fluency point.
Writing
Plan, write, check and improve.
Task: Write a short practical response about food or health using the lesson focus and vocabulary. Target: 40–60 words.
Need help? Build your answer in small steps
- Opening: one clear sentence that answers the task.
- Detail: add two relevant pieces of information.
- Extend: add a reason, opinion, time phrase or example.
- Check: compare agreement, spelling and tense with the lesson rule.
Patterns from this lesson you can adapt:
- يتكوَّن من
Try first without opening this support. Adapt the patterns; do not copy them as a complete answer.
Activities
Complete the activities in order, or choose the one that addresses your weakest area.
Food from the Arab world — a map
Study a map of the Arab world. your partner points to a country and says one traditional dish associated with it: Egypt (كشري/فول)، Jordan (منسف)، Morocco (طاجين)، Saudi Arabia (كبسة)، Lebanon (فلافل/حمص). Write the country and dish. Then: "Who has tried any of these dishes?" Look at of hands. For you with Arabic heritage: "Which dishes are part of your family's cooking?" This validates heritage knowledge and creates genuine curiosity for those unfamiliar.
8 traditional dishes — vocabulary and composition
Study 8 dishes using flashcards with pictures. For each: name → country of origin → main ingredients (using يتكوَّن من). Model: "الحمص طبق شهير في لبنان وسوريا وفلسطين. يتكوَّن من الحمص والطحينة والليمون. يُقَدَّم مع الخبز العربي." Write similar 3-sentence descriptions for 4 dishes of their choice from the 8 presented. Note the cultural sensitivity: many dishes are claimed by multiple Arab countries — this is acknowledged as a rich cultural discussion rather than a dispute.
Food culture paragraph — 70–80 words
Write a food culture paragraph about Arabic cuisine: "المطبخ العربي من أغنى المطابخ في العالم. يتميَّز بـ.. من أشهر الأطباق العربية.." Must include: يتكوَّن من، يُقَدَّم مع، مصنوع من (all three composition structures), at least 4 dish names, at least 2 countries mentioned, one opinion sentence (في رأيي / أُفَضِّل), and one cultural observation. Level 1: writing frame. Level 2: topic sentences only. Level 3: free writing. Focus: are the passive structures (يُقَدَّم مع، مصنوع من) used correctly?
Authentic recipe reading
Use a short extract from an authentic Arabic recipe (for hummus or falafel — simple ingredients and basic method). Identify: ingredients (المكوِّنات)، method steps (خطوات التحضير). Answer 3 questions: What is the first ingredient? How many steps does the method have? What question would you ask if you needed more information? This authentic text reading previews Paper 2 skills — authentic texts on familiar topics.
Dish of the week
You vote for your favourite Arabic dish from those presented today. Build a class popularity chart. Read results: "الطبق الأكثر شعبية في صفنا هو.." Write one sentence recommending this dish to a friend: "أنصحك بتجربة [dish] لأنَّه/لأنَّها [taste/quality adjective] ومصنوع من [ingredients]." This combines food vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and advice language in one sentence — the kind of rich, integrated language that earns Range marks.
Useful to have

Stretch challenge
If you already speak some Arabic at home: write a detailed recipe (وصفة طبخ) in Arabic for a dish from their heritage — including exact quantities (using Arabic numbers), ingredient list (قائمة المكوِّنات)، and method steps (خطوات التحضير). Use يتكوَّن من، يُضاف، يُحَرَّك (it is stirred), يُقَدَّم مع. 90+ words.
Plenary
Finish with a quick check and one clear next step.
